Reimbursement Guidelines for the NeuroBlate™ System

The NeuroBlate® System is a 510(k) cleared neurosurgical device available for sale in the U.S. and Canada.  The system includes an installed, capital component and an assortment of consumable patient care items.

Coding for LITT Procedures

“The NeuroBlate System is applied during an inpatient surgical procedure that may be coded to existing ICD-9CM code 17.61, “MRI-guided interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) of lesion or tissue of the brain”.    For Medicare patients, this code tracks in GROUPER to Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) 25, 26 and 27, Craniotomy and Endovascular Intracranial Procedures.

New Technology Distinction from CMS: Effective October 1st, 2010 a New Technology Add-On Payment of $5,300 was approved by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for use of the NeuroBlate System in brain neoplasm cases, diagnosis Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM).

In August, 2012, CMS extended this New Technology Add-On for an additional year. The New Technology Add-On Payments to US hospitals expired in 2013.
