Heat (hyperthermia therapy) or cold (cryotherapy) is commonly used to treat extracranial tumors of the liver, breast, prostate and other organs. Most heat sources are radiofrequency, microwave, laser, electric or ultrasonic.
•
Thermal therapy has heretofore not been used commonly in the treatment of brain tumors because of the difficulty in controlling energy deposition – i.e. generating sufficient lethal temperature within the entire tumor while avoiding damage to surrounding healthy brain tissue.
•
Monteris™’ AutoLITT™ technology has solved these issues by employing a unique focused laser design to heat tumors from the inside(i.e. interstitially) under the directional and dosage control of a neurosurgeon who observes the procedure with real-time MRI imaging.
