Radiation is generally employed as an adjuvant (complementary) therapy to surgery or SRS. The treatment objective usually is to address cancer cells outside of the main tumor mass or those missed by the primary intervention.  |

Whole brain or regional radiation is applied by sophisticated external beam radiation devices such as LINAC (linear accelerators). Radiation is usually delivered in “fractions,” meaning a portion of the total required dose is delivered each day over a course of multiple treatments.  |

Radiation sources may also be implanted at the tumor site, a procedure known as brachytherapy, for more localized radiation delivery. (In one method, a small balloon filled with radioactive material is implanted at the site of a resected tumor.  |
