Focused Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (“f-LITT”) is the next generation refinement of laser-based thermal therapy technologies. Developed by Monteris™ to overcome the control limitations of conventional LITT, f-LITT enables precise control over the deposition of heat energy, thereby enabling the physician to contain cell damage exclusively to within a tumor mass of virtually any shape and size.
•
A minimally-invasive laser probe is inserted into the tumor, similar to brain biopsy procedures.
•
With minimal maneuvering under real-time MRI visualization the surgeon focuses the laser beam to heat targeted tissue from the tumor core to the margin.
•
Directional heat propagation from the probe is controlled by internal probe cooling and focused laser targeting.
•
Radial distance of the heat propagation from the probe is delicately contained by the balance of incoming laser energy, thermal conductivity of the tumor tissue and the natural heat-sink properties of native brain tissue.
•
The procedure is conducted with the patient in a standard MRI imager, enabling the operating neurosurgeon to have real-time visualization of the treatment.
•
The combination of controllable/directional energy deposition and real-time visualization gives the surgeon real-time ability to “sculpt” tissue ablation.
